Perhimpunan Pengembangan Media Nusantara (PPMN)

PPMN is an Indonesian non-profit organization established in 2006 to develop media professionalism and to extend access to information in Indonesia and other countries in Asia. It does so through capacity building programs, establishing new media in isolated locations, emergency assistance for media in disaster areas, media content production and book publication. PPMN originates from a decision by KBR, Indonesia’s first and only independent radio news agency, to separate its non-profit programs from its for-profit activities in order to ensure maximum transparency and efficiency. PPMN offers a cost-effective means of supporting and implementing cutting edge and strategically planned media assistance programs that address key information needs, managed by an organization that conforms to international standards of programmatic and financial accountability and transparency.

Vision

Professional media and a free and fair flow of information at the core of an open, democratic, and dignified society.

Mission

  • To improve professionalism in the media in Asia by raising journalism, management and technical standards and, in so doing, increase the quality of information and education provided to the general public while simultaneously strengthening independent media’s ability to develop, grow and be sustainable over the long-term.

  • To increase access to information across the political, economic and social spectrum, a pre-requisite to significant and effective civil society participation in public life and engagement in the democratic process.

  • To ensure information flow in emergencies by repairing and rebuilding media and producing media content to meet immediate needs.

Hallmarks of PPMN’s Approach

Tailor-made: programs are all individually designed to meet the specific needs of the media and media workers concerned.

Integrated: Programs are designed to be mutually reinforcing and complementary.

Local solutions to local challenges: Peer-to-peer knowledge and skills transfer is preferred.

Building local expertise: PPMN not only focuses on building the capacity of media and media professionals, but also of those implementing the programs.

Strategic: PPMNs founders and its small team of professional staff and trainers are drawn from across the Indonesian media and have an indepth understanding of the key issues.
